Engagement with the BUILD SM Center extends well beyond planning. Manufacturers continue working with our team to refine priorities, implement targeted improvements, and apply Smart Manufacturing solutions in real-world operating environments—building momentum and delivering measurable results over time.
Programs and Initiatives
The California Shipbuilding Ecosystems Alliance (CalSEA) is a public–private partnership dedicated to expanding the state’s shipbuilding capacity and capabilities by growing a resilient, competitive, and technologically advanced maritime industrial base. By providing workforce development, supplier development and technology adoption, the alliance supports the US Navy’s efforts to develop and expand California’s submarine and maritime industrial base.
California’s Smart Manufacturing Leadership Program (CA SMLP) offers no cost services to help California manufacturers adopt smart manufacturing and energy efficient processes and technologies to increase productivity, reduce costs and help them compete and thrive in an Industry 4.0 world. The program creates awareness of the value and benefits of smart manufacturing through its various offerings, including smart manufacturing self-assessments, bootcamps, apprenticeships, and upskilling of existing employees, as well as technical assistance to help manufacturers adopt smart manufacturing and energy efficient practices.
AI-enabled Smart Manufacturing focuses on harnessing scalable, AI-ready data to drive real-time, data-informed decision-making across factory operations and supply chains. Building on a data-first strategy, it integrates machine learning, digital twins, and interoperable platforms to transform raw industrial data into actionable insights that improve productivity, quality, energy efficiency, and resilience.
As part of CESMII’s national network of Smart Manufacturing Innovation Centers, CA SMIC directly advances California’s economic, climate, and workforce priorities and translates UCLA’s technical expertise into tangible economic resilience. In 2025, CA SMIC played a pivotal role in strengthening California’s manufacturing ecosystem, specifically supporting small and medium‑sized manufacturers (SMMs) in adopting the sustainable, data‑driven practices necessary to remain competitive in shifting global supply chains.
